Didsbury Donuts triumph in Manchester Juniors League game

Wed 21 Mar 2018

Didsbury Donuts came out on top in the first game of 2018 in the Manchester Juniors Baseball/Softball League on Sunday 18 March at Powerleague Trafford.

In a nail-biting face-off between the Urmston Ripper Nippers and the Didsbury Donuts, the teams battled for the win until the final minutes.  The Donuts’ Toby O’Sullivan was awarded MVP honours for the game following his spectacular performance and three-run home run in the final inning that clinched the win for Didsbury.

In the hour-long game, the teams played four innings, with each inning capped at seven runs.  In the final inning, however, the teams could score unlimited runs, only switching when three outs were made.

Didsbury Donuts have now racked up five wins against the Urmston Ripper Nippers since March 2017.

Teams and spectators were treated to complimentary chips following the game in the on-site bar, and the Didsbury Donuts divided up their chocolatey prizes amongst themselves.

Reactions

BaseballSoftballUK North West Coach Linni Mitchell said, “We have tried to up the ante for our North West Juniors Baseball/Softball games, creating an exciting environment for the children to compete in.  We had music blasting and invited parents and siblings along to spectate from the sidelines.  Having a BASU umpire in full uniform made the event special for the local teams and captured attention from others in the venue as they passed.”

Nathan Barratt who has been coaching both teams for the past few weeks, added: “It’s great to see all of the kids performing to their best abilities in a competitive environment.  Kids who are chilled out during our weekly juniors training sessions really got into the spirit of the game.”

BSUK's North West Development Manager Luis Arrevillagas said: "We have had a long autumn/winter here in the North West and the kids are itching to get back outdoors to practice their skills.  We have a lot of schools signed up for after-school programmes in the summer term and we will be encouraging them to get involved in our baseball/softball clubs outside of school too."
