Farmors A take the title at the Gloucestershire School Games

Tue 19 Jun 2018

The Gloucestershire School Games softball competition, now in its fifth year, was hosted on Friday 15 June at Hartpury College, and a new champion was crowned.

Ten schools, two each from the five School Games Organiser areas in the county, descended on the College to battle it out for the 2018 County title, and the 10 teams were split into two pools of five teams for an initial round-robin.

Pool A

In Pool A, reigning champions Archway A started the competition on the front foot with wins over Farmors B and Pittville, while debutants Kingshill School from Cirencester impressed with a win over Pittville.

In the other matches, former champions Dene Magna secured comfortable wins over Farmors B and Pittville, and with the opening stages of the competition completed it was Dene Magna and Archway A that occupied the top two places in the table.  Kingshill took third place over Farmors B on runs conceded with Pittville in fifth place.

Pool B

Meanwhile, in Pool B, it was clear that Farmors A were going to pose a strong challenge after victories against all the other sides in the pool.  Chosen Hill were also in good form, securing wins against Churchdown and Wydean to take second spot in the group.

Archway B picked up points in their win over Churchdown, and Wydean also hit some good form with wins against Archway B and Churchdown.

The playoffs pitted teams from Pool A against the team occupying the same position in Pool B.

Pittville secured their first victory of the day in beating Churchdown by 5-4 in the ninth place match.

Archway B overcame Farmors B by a score of 4-2 to take seventh spot, while new kids on the block Kingshill School finished a very creditable fifth after defeating Wydean by 6-4.

Chosen Hill edged out Dene Magna 6-3 to secure third place, which left reigning champions Archway A to take on the red-hot Farmors A in the final.

Batting first, Archway’s usually efficient offense wasn't able to post as many runs as usual.  But with Archway A ahead by a single run and the last batter for Farmors A at the plate, a strong drive to left field brought two runs home and gave Farmors A the 2018 title.

National picture

BaseballSoftballUK National Development Manager Chris Rawlings said,  "I am so pleased to see this event go from strength to strength.  In the five years since it started, we have not only seen the number of schools playing softball increase in the county, but the standard has also risen dramatically.  For Farmors School to take on and defeat Archway in the final is a testament to this.  Archway have led the way with softball in Gloucestershire: not only have they won the School Games District and County titles in the past, but they have also established an intra-mural softball for students in Years 7-9 and entered two teams into the Bristol Softball Association.  So huge congratulations to Farmors on taking the title this year and to all teams for entering and creating a great day of softball."

Baseball and/or softball are part of the School Games in Northamptonshire, Gloucestershire, Kent, Slough, Oxfordshire, Manchester, Leicestershire, Birmingham and Shropshire, and provided a strong framework for BaseballSoftballUK to engage schools in both sports.
