Softball and Scouts come together at Farnham Park

Mon 14 May 2018

Around 30 girls and boys aged 10-14 from the 1st Hedgerley Scouts Group in Farnham Common, plus a number of adult Scout leaders, had what for most of them was a first taste of softball at Farnham Park on the early evening of Friday 4 May.

The session was run by BSUK’s Fastpitch Development Manager Johanna Malisani, assisted by GB Under-13 Manager Julie Spittle and GB players Holly Newell and Dan Patterson.

The young Scouts all took to the game, and Scout Leader Jenny Davies said, “1st Hedgerley Scouts had a fantastic evening with BaseballSoftballUK.  Most of the young people had never played the sport before but fully embraced the coaches’ skills training before playing several innings.  All the Scouts came away excited by the sport after an enjoyable session.  It's great to have such amazing facilities on our doorstep!"

Looking ahead

BaseballSoftballUK, through Development Manager Patrick Knock, has established a relationship with the scout group nearest to Farnham Park, and the session on 4 May was a way of promoting the Farnham Park Junior Softball Sessions which will begin on Thursday 17 May and run on a weekly basis until late July.

These sessions are open to any local children and teenagers aged 6-16 years old, regardless of previous experience or ability.

Beyond this, the plan is to build a wider partnership with Scouts groups in the South Bucks area and explore the potential for a competition structure involving these groups in the near future.
