Twenty teams to contest UK Little League Qualifiers this weekend

Mon 3 Jun 2019

Another new record will be set over this coming weekend – 8-9 June at Farnham Park – when 20 teams converge on the site for the 2019 UK Little League Qualifiers, eclipsing last year’s turnout of 19 teams.

The tournament will be run by BaseballSoftballUK across five age groups and categories, and the winners from the three oldest groups – Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 -- will go on to represent the UK in Europe/Africa Little League Qualification Tournaments later in the summer.

The winners of those tournaments will go on to represent Europe and Africa in Little League World Series tournaments in the United States.

Liz Knight, Assistant District Administrator for Little League in the UK, said: "I’m really looking forward to the tournament this weekend, because it’s a real showcase of youth baseball from around the country.  Some teams have high hopes of qualifying for Europe while others are just excited to be playing in a tournament with their friends on dirt fields.  Regardless, I’m looking forward to seeing the Little League founding principles -- courage , character and loyalty -- on show this weekend."

Formats

In both the Under-11 / Coach Pitch and Under-11 / Minors tournaments, the four teams will play each other once in a single round-robin, with games consisting of four innings.  There will be no final, so placings will be based on the round-robin results.

Under-11 / Minors games on Sunday 9 June will get under way at 10.00 am on Field 3, though games in this competition will also be played on Field 4.

Under-11 / Coach Pitch games will start at 10.30 am on Field 4, though games in this competition will also be played on Fields 2 and 3.

In the Under-13 / Majors tournament, the six teams will play a double-elimination format as required by Little League, with games consisting of six innings.  This competition will use Fields 3 and 4 on Saturday and Fields 1 and 2 on Sunday.

Games will begin at 9.30 am on Saturday and the last of the six games played will finish around 6.00 pm.  There will be another 9.30 am start on Sunday, with the last game scheduled for mid-afternoon.

The three teams in the Under-15 / Juniors tournament will play a round-robin on Field 2 on Saturday 8 June, with seven-inning games at 9.00 am, noon and 3.00 pm.  Those three games will determine the final placings.

The three teams in the Under-17 / Seniors tournament will play a round-robin on Field 1 on Saturday, with seven-inning games at 10.30 am and 1.30 and 4.30 pm.  Those three games will determine the final placings.

Come on down!

The UK Little League Qualifiers is always one of the most exciting and rewarding tournaments on the baseball calendar, and spectators are urged to come to Farnham Park this weekend to cheer on the young players living out their competitive dreams and dramas on the field.

The Home Plate Bar & Kitchen next to Field 1 will be open from 8.30 am to 8.30 pm on both days, serving delicious hot food and a range of drinks and snacks.
