    BSUK Coach Award - Coach Award (Equivalent to Level 2)

    Introduction

    This course has been developed specifically for coaches that need to plan, deliver and evaluate a series of linked and progressive coaching sessions independently. It is a combined course designed for both baseball and softball coaches.

    The course will take place over three sessions - Saturday 18 January, Sunday 19 January and assessment on Sunday, 2 February.

    Why do the course?

    • You will learn everything you need to run practice and organise your team for an entire season
    • Learn how to creatively run practice making the best use of time and space to engage participants of all abilities
    • Earn a coaching qualification that is recognised by BaseballSoftballUK
    • This course has been developed in partnership with Great Britain Baseball and GB Softball
    • Interact with and learn from your peers whilst receiving the most up to date information on coaching techniques
    • You will become a better more well rounded coach

    Who is it suitable for?

    • Coaches who are responsible for teams over a season including running practice, selecting lineups and planning preseason
    • Assistant coaches who lead on skills areas or plan other areas of practice
    • Coaches that want to take responsibility for the ongoing development of players
    • Coaches wishing to work independently or as a licensed coach
    • Coaches who need an equivalent of a Level 2 Qualification or Award
    • Experienced players looking to become a qualified coach
    • Coaches with the old BSUK Level 1 and are looking for the next step in their development

    What are the pre-requisites?

    • Learners must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
    • Learners must attend one of the Pitching CPD modules (Baseball, Fastpitch or Slowpitch) plus one other CPD module prior to certification. The cost of attending each CPD course is included as part of the Coach Award, but if you choose to use the BSUK Coach Summit for your second CPD module then you must cover the full cost of attending the summit
    • Attendance of the CPD workshops is required before you can be certified.
    • Learners must have a coach license prior to certification

    Learning Outcomes

    • Explain the role of the coach, how this relates to baseball and softball and how this differs for different participants needs
    • Lead sessions either on their own or as part of a coaching staff through the development of their skills, knowledge and confidence
    • Plan and deliver effective practices taking into account time and space considerations, safety, age specific needs, time of year, development stage of participants and sport specific needs
    • Understand the basic safety requirements when teaching pitching in baseball, fastpitch and slowpitch softball as well as catching in baseball and fastpitch softball
    • Teach the fundamental and generic skills of throwing and catching, hitting, playing infield, playing outfield and baserunning
    • Understand the basic principles of coaching and informing athletes on health and lifestyle including warming up and cooling down, nutrition, hydration, strength and conditioning, and the dangers of using performance enhancing drugs

    Learners must be 18 years of age or over.

    Cost

    The three sessions cost £290 per person.

    BaseballSoftballUK Coach Summit 2020

    BaseballSoftballUK has announced that the 2020 Coach Summit will be held on Saturday 25 January. After last year's highly successful Coach Summit, the 2020 summit will be returning to Milton Keynes, again hosted at the Kents Hill Park Training & Conference Centre in Milton Keynes.

    The theme of this year's Summit will be collaboration and maximising opportunities to help take baseball and softball to the next level at both participation and talent levels. Building on the successful staging of the first ever MLB London Series followed by the Olympic qualification campaigns in 2019, coaching will once again be at the forefront of our plans to grow and promote baseball and softball here in the UK. Kickstart your planning and preparations for the summer 2020 season by attending the BaseballSoftballUK Coach Summit 2020!

    British Baseball & Softball Coaching Awards

    The Fifth Annual Coaching Awards will once again follow the Coach Summit, providing an opportunity to recognise the hard work and expertise of coaches and volunteers in the British baseball and softball communities.  The 2020 Coach Summit will take place on Saturday 25 January at the Kents Hill Park Conference Centre in Milton Keynes.

    Nominations are open until 20 December and can be made here.

    Manchester Baseball - Pitching Clinic

    Date: Saturday 1st February 2020 12:30 - 3:30pm

    Venue: Fives Trafford Soccer Centre, Trafford Way, Stretford, Manchester M17 8DD
    Showers, changing rooms and toilets are all available on site.

    What can I expect?
    A carefully designed programme of skills focusing on key aspects of baseball pitching for competitive players, delivered by assistant GB Baseball Coach, Jonathan Rodriguez.
    Jonathan is U15 hitting coach, U23 bench coach. He is Head Coach of Legends Baseball Club in Southern California and has produced 25 professional players since 2013 with the Legends.

    Training will be held inside, so dress appropriately for the conditions. Please bring your glove and any snacks/drinks you may require.

    The clinic is aimed at any baseball players who want to up their game for the 2020 outdoor season.
    There are 12 places available on a first come first served basis.

    How much will it cost?

    All participants will receive a certificate on completion of the clinic.

    BSUK Activator Course - Activator

    What is an Activator?

    The Activator is a new role, aimed at increasing the number of 16+ playing recreational baseball and softball on a regular basis. Sessions can run anywhere, and at any time to meet the participants needs. At the park, in leisure centres, at work, in universities and further education colleges, youth centres, community groups and existing baseball and softball clubs or leagues. Wherever there is suitable space, indoor or out, baseball and softball can be played. The Award aims to engage players of all abilities, keeping sessions fun and focusing on participation through challenges, mini games as well as skill development and playing baseball and softball. The Activator may have a coaching background but the role is to facilitate activity not ‘coach’.

    Who is the Activator Award suitable for?

    • Upskilling a volunteer, current player or coach to become an Activator and facilitate sessions
    • The Activator role can enhance what a club already offers to recruit new recreational members through providing a more affordable Award course to upskill workforce and offer a structure for recreational sessions that hasn’t been available through BaseballSoftballUK before.
    • The Activator may have a coaching background but the role is to facilitate activity, not ‘coach’.
    • The Activator role offers a taster into what leading a baseball or softball session may involve.

    Why do the course?

    • It will prepare you for deployment as an Activator in baseball and softball.
    • If you would like to learn the rules and skills needed to introduce baseball and softball as a game to new participants, this is the course for you!
    • On achieving the award, you will be able to facilitate extra-curricular activities in baseball and softball within educational settings such as schools, Further/Higher Education and community participation programmes.
    • By attending and completing the course, you can gain a one-year membership of BSUK’s Activator Licence Scheme.

    Learners need to be a minimum of 16 years of age
    Be passionate about increasing participation and retaining the number of people playing recreations baseball and softball
    Knowledge of baseball and/or softball is desirable

    Cost

    This one-day activator session costs £35 per person.

    The clinic is aimed at any competitive slowpitch players who want to up their game for the 2020 outdoor season.
    There are 16 places available on a first come first served basis.

    How much will it cost?
    £30 per person

    Slowpitch Softball Academy

    Update 20/1/20: Due to a large amount of interest, the Slowpitch Softball Academy for 14 March is currently at capacity. Further information will be announced as it becomes available.

    The Slowpitch Academy is aimed at any competitive slowpitch players who want to increase their skills and understanding of the game. While there are no age restrictions on the sessions, the Slowpitch Softball Academy is primarily for adult players.

    £36 per person

    All participants will receive a certificate on completion of the clinic.

    2019-20 National University Baseball Championship

    The 2019-20 BSUK Universities baseball season comes to a close with the National University Baseball Championship, which will crown a champion after two days of play at Farnham Park.

    MLB Slowpitch Cup

    This co-ed slowpitch softball competition is an open invitation tournament welcoming both recreational to competitive teams. Themed around the 30 MLB franchises, participating teams will each represent a baseball teams and run out in that team’s colours, including the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs who are coming to London in June for the MLB London Series. Played across two days, teams will be grouped into American and National Leagues, culminating in ‘World Series’ Finals. Games will be timed to maximise the amount of games played and will be officiated by BASU.

    Held prior to the London Series, early registration will be incentivised by the chance to win tickets to the London Series, a fund-raising ticket raffle will be run throughout the weekend and winning teams and MVPs will receive ticket prizes to the London Series.
