Progress update on the Northern baseball and softball facility
Wed 19 Oct 2016
Just over 18 months ago, BaseballSoftballUK announced the intention to build a new purpose-built facility in Manchester. Here is an update on where things stand with the project.
The Manchester facility will be designed to serve the current needs of baseball and softball in Manchester as well to be a catalyst for the growth of both sports in the region. Discussions at the time with local partners indicated that the project could be completed in 2017.
BaseballSoftballUK has been working very closely with Manchester City Council, which is currently undertaking a review of their playing pitch strategy based on an analysis of demand for their outdoor playing facilities.
BSUK’s North West Development Manager Luis Arrevillagas said: “Understandably, good playing land in Manchester is sought by many sports. I have always believed that when we build a facility in the North, it has to be in the right location in order to get a return on investment and to really have an effect on the growth of the sports.”
While time scales have not changed drastically, there is much work to be done to get the project off the ground, especially around fundraising. BSUK is currently planning to submit funding proposals to Sport England and the Baseball Tomorrow Fund as well as looking at other sources and community fundraising. If the funding portfolio can be pulled together soon --and a lot of work is currently going into this -- then we are aiming for a project start date of April/May 2017.
